Olkhon - the shamanist island

Olkhon (in Russian Ольхо́н) is the third-largest lake-bound island in the world. It is by far the largest island in Lake Baikal in eastern Siberia, with an area of 730 square km.

The indigenous Buryats, adherents of shamanism, believe the island to be a spiritual place; one of the groups of deities adhered to in Buryati yellow shamanism is called the oikony noyod, the "thirteen lords of Olkhon. On the western coast, close to Khuzhir (the main village), is Baikal's most famous landmark, the Shamanka, or Shaman's Rock. Natives believe that Burkhan (Buda), a modern religious cult figure of the Altai peoples, lives in the cave in this rock. The rock is one of nine Asian Most Sacred Places.

On the way to Olkhon island - there are scheduled buses from Irkutsk and the journey takes about 6 hrs with 20 min on a ferry. I took these photos in late October - it can be seen how cold it is - in 9:00am it was -22 degrees Celsius.

Following a Shamanist tradition travelers leave a piece of their clothes or just a small part a material when pass, because of a belief for luck on the way.

Welcome to my place.. and feel relaxed
